The Gem That Was Will Always Be

Women

When we are young

They tell us we are precious gems

They tell us never to forget

Not to give ourselves away

And not just to anybody

As we grow

Some of us forget

And neglect

Our value

Our pricelessness

We realize ourselves as what we can offer

Perhaps to almost anyone

We see our new self-recognition

As a new gift

Something to show everyone

Because you can

Before too long

A new recognition kicks in

You see that you made many mistakes

You realize that you gave so much

To so many

Sometimes we do things just for action

To escape the monotonous routine of speech

To liberate ourselves from thinking

From having to know our own value

Meanwhile we neglect our gem

Place it on the table

Away from its light

Our life and the beauty of our hearts

Our souls

Our gems stop reflecting

We act absentminded

We stop inspecting our spectators

We know what’s right

But only do wrong

We become foolish

We forget we are precious

We stop protecting our gem

Ignorantly

We forget anyone will steal it

If given the chance

Then one day,

Some of us

Find ourselves in a pond of filth

Clouded

Muddied

Surrounded by dirt and useless debris

To those of us drowning in this pond

We can’t see the sparkle

Of that which is precious

All we know is that we are swimming

In shit

All we know is that we lead ourselves to this pond

We jumped in

Even though we knew it would taint our gem

The gem now covered with smudges

With dirt and with scratches

There is no hope, we think

For the sun does not shine

The water is too muddy to see the sky

Soon we believe we belong here

We adjust

Sometimes we think it is too late to change

To adapt to a better reality

We accept the pond as our fate

But should we?

Do we have to?

Do we want to?

Or do we, should we

Must we

Become the jeweler…

…and care…
