This Tuesday’s One Word Photo Challenge is Persimmon.
This is a beautiful color in my opinion. However I will say that I think it highlights how these challenges can be, well, just that challenging. As we saw with the challenge for Marsala, trying to match various shades is tricky. Going through my portfolio of pictures I’m suddenly finding more Marsala pictures, and still others that seem to represent Persimmon well though I wonder if they’re actually more fitting for a future challenge! This is especially so when you use images of say flowers that tend to consist of a variety of shades. Luckily Jennifer over at One Word Photo Challenge posts the colors for future challenges. Anywho, I digress, my entry is actually a repeat from earlier this year (see Hausermann’s Pics) when I visited Hausermann’s Greenhouse for the first time. They are renowned Orchid growers, I was in heaven there.
The name of this plant is Masdevallia Dean Haas ‘Gina Gina’. It’s not a plant that I took home but I loved it all the same. The spike stretches up above the plant but only about 4-6″ upon which a small roughly 1″ flower blooms. I couldn’t take my eyes off this lovely color, so even as I didn’t want to use a repeat image for this challenge I couldn’t help myself because it fits so well. Masdevallias are members of the Pleurothallis alliance. The plants themselves were rather small, which almost folded me into getting one but I resisted (for now). I believe they prefer cooler temperatures though this hybrid has been said to be more temperature tolerant.
